Designing icons that feel at home

A look inside the studio at how we balance gloss, restraint, and the peculiar scale of the Dock.

A Mac app icon has one of the strangest jobs in design. It has to be legible at 16 pixels in the menu bar, inviting at 64 pixels in the Dock, and distinctive at 1,024 pixels on a product page. Most of the work happens in the space between those sizes.

Start with the silhouette

Before color, before texture, we draw the shape in solid black. If it doesn't read as one idea at 32 pixels, no amount of gradient will save it.

Use gloss as a material, not a decoration

The older Mac icon language leaned heavily on glass and shine. We keep a little of that tactility but let the color do most of the talking. A single highlight near the top-left is usually enough.

The icon should look like it belongs on the Mac without looking like it came with it.

The final test is always the same: put it in a real Dock, next to real apps, at a real size. Then leave it there for a week and see if it still feels right.
