The Mac has quietly become a decent place to play games. Not every game, and not always on day one, but enough that you can stop thinking of it as the computer you use for work while the console handles the fun.
What runs well
Apple silicon handles native titles beautifully. Games built for Metal are the safest bet. Cloud streaming is also a genuinely good option for big releases; on a stable connection it feels closer to local play than it did two years ago.
A controller changes everything
A PlayStation or Xbox controller pairs in seconds and makes most games feel more at home. macOS handles switching between controller and keyboard gracefully in modern titles.
- Check the game's Mac requirements before buying.
- Keep 20–30 GB free for shader caches and updates.
- Enable Game Mode in System Settings for better frame pacing.
- Use a wired connection for cloud gaming when possible.
And if a game you love isn't available? That's still true of plenty. The gap is closing, but it's worth checking before you commit.
