There is no single secret switch that makes a Mac fast again. There is a sensible order of operations. Do the first five before you touch the last five, and do not spend money until you have tried the free ones.
The first five: free and immediate
- Restart the Mac. It clears weeks of accumulated state.
- Free at least 15% of your disk.
- Disable unnecessary login items.
- Update macOS and your most-used apps.
- Quit browser tabs and extensions you do not need right now.
The next four: a little digging
- Check Activity Monitor for CPU and memory hogs while idle.
- Turn off unnecessary menu bar utilities and background helpers.
- Move a large photo or video library to an external drive.
- Reset the SMC only if you have a specific hardware symptom, not as a ritual.
The last three: when hardware is the answer
If an Intel Mac has 8GB of RAM and a spinning drive, no cleaner will make it feel modern. An SSD and more memory are real upgrades. On Apple silicon, the usual limit is storage, not raw speed. Be honest about which category you are in.
Cleaners remove clutter. They do not add memory. Knowing the difference saves a lot of money.
